8. DIY Tissue Paper Pom-Poms

8
Tissue paper pom-poms are the unsung heroes of budget party decor. They’re lightweight, colorful, and incredibly forgiving, even the slightly lopsided ones look great when hung in a cluster.

Materials

  • Tissue paper in 4 to 6 colors
  • Scissors
  • Floral wire or pipe cleaners
  • Fishing line for hanging

Instructions

For each pom-pom, stack 8 to 10 sheets of tissue paper. Fold the stack accordion-style, making folds about 1.5 inches wide. Once the entire stack is folded, tie a piece of floral wire or a pipe cleaner tightly around the center. Cut the ends into rounded or pointed shapes, then gently pull each layer of tissue up and toward the center, fluffing as you go. This is the part that feels a little like opening a flower.

Attach fishing line to the center tie, and hang pom-poms at varying heights from the ceiling. A cluster of 5 to 7 in different sizes looks more intentional than a single oversized one.

Time and difficulty: About 20 minutes per pom-pom, beginner-friendly.

Customization: Mix pastel tones for a soft spring shower, or go bold with jewel tones for an autumn or winter event. For a metallic touch, look for tissue paper with a gold or silver shimmer.

Common mistake to avoid: Pulling the tissue too aggressively when fluffing. Tissue paper tears easily, so work slowly and gently. If one layer rips, just keep going; no one will notice once it’s all fluffed out.
