4. Hand-Lettered Welcome Sign

A welcome sign is one of the first things guests see, and it sets the tone for the entire event. Hand-lettered signs feel personal in a way that printed ones don’t, and you don’t have to be a professional calligrapher to make one that looks lovely.
Materials
- Large kraft paper roll or foam board
- Black, white, or gold paint markers (like Posca or Sharpie oil-based)
- Pencil for sketching
- Wooden dowel or picture frame (optional)
Instructions
Lay your kraft paper on a flat surface and lightly sketch your message with a pencil. Keep the design simple, a phrase like “Welcome to [Bride’s Name]’s Bridal Shower” works beautifully. Use a paint marker to trace over your pencil lines in thick, confident strokes. If hand-lettering feels intimidating, print your phrase in a clean font from your computer, then trace it lightly onto the kraft paper before filling in with the marker.
Mount the finished sign in a simple wooden frame, prop it on an easel, or tack it to the wall with decorative washi tape. If you’re using a foam board, paint the edges in a coordinating color for a polished look.
Time and difficulty: 1 to 2 hours, beginner to moderate depending on lettering confidence.
Helpful tip: Practice your lettering on scrap paper first. Take your time with the sketch, since erasing kraft paper can leave marks.
Customization: Add small illustrated details like a heart, leaf, or simple floral sprigs in the corners. These don’t need to be perfect; a little imperfection adds charm.
