8. Plant-Wrapped Fairy Light Trees

If you have a small tree, a large potted plant, or even a tall topiary on your patio, wrapping it in fairy lights can transform it into a glowing focal point. This works especially well with evergreens or trees with interesting branch structures, but even a leafy fig tree can look magical with the right lights.
Materials include one or more strands of battery-operated or solar fairy lights, and optionally lightweight ornaments or small glass baubles to add visual interest. Choose lights with thin, dark wires for a more subtle look that lets the foliage shine.
Begin at the base of the plant and wrap the lights upward in a spiral, spacing them about two to three inches apart. Don’t wrap too tightly: you want the lights to nestle among the branches rather than constrict growth. Tuck the battery pack into a small pouch and hide it at the base of the pot, behind a decorative stone, or inside a planter sleeve. If your tree is large, you may need two or three strands connected together.
Wrapping a single tree takes about twenty minutes and is one of the easiest projects on this list. The visual impact, however, is significant: a single wrapped tree can anchor an entire patio design and make the space feel like an enchanted garden.
For extra sparkle, tuck a few shatterproof ornaments into the branches along with the lights. They catch the glow and add dimension, especially in trees with sparse foliage.
