3. Patio Umbrella Lighting with Fairy Lights

Most patio umbrellas have metal ribs that are perfect for wrapping string lights around. By weaving fairy lights along the inside of the umbrella, you can turn an ordinary sunshade into a glowing lantern once the sun goes down.
Materials include one or two battery-operated strands of fairy lights, zip ties or twist ties, and optional sheer ribbon in a coordinating color. Make sure your lights are outdoor-safe or at least rated for damp conditions.
Start by opening your umbrella fully. Beginning at the top, wind a strand of lights around the central pole and down each rib, spacing the lights evenly. Secure the strand at the top and bottom of each rib with a small zip tie, then trim the excess. If you want a fuller look, add a second strand that zig-zags between the ribs rather than following them. Tuck the battery pack into a small fabric pouch tied to the pole, or place it on the table if it’s easily accessible.
This project takes less than thirty minutes and is gentle enough for a first-time DIYer. It’s also wonderfully portable: if you close the umbrella during a storm or move it to another spot, the lights go right along with it. The look is whimsical and works especially well for smaller patios or balconies where overhead installations aren’t possible.
For a playful twist, choose fairy lights with tiny shapes like stars, moons, or flowers. These add visual interest during the day when the lights are off, too.
