7. Fence Zig-Zag Pattern for Backdrop Drama

A wooden fence is a blank canvas waiting for some light. Instead of running string lights in a straight line along the top of the fence, try a zig-zag pattern. This creates a more visually interesting backdrop and reflects light off the fence surface, making the whole patio feel brighter and more enclosed.
Materials include several strands of outdoor string lights, cup hooks or adhesive outdoor hooks, and optional sheer curtain panels to soften the look. You’ll need a measuring tape and a pencil to mark hook placement.
Plan your zig-zag by measuring the length of your fence and dividing it into even sections. For each section, place one hook at the top of the fence and one near the bottom, alternating the side of the fence for each section. The hooks should be slightly inset so the lights create gentle diagonal lines rather than sharp angles. Run the string lights between each hook, creating a wave-like pattern across the entire fence.
This setup takes about two hours, including the measuring and hook installation. The look is particularly striking for outdoor dinner parties, as the lights reflect off the fence and create a glowing wall behind your guests. Adding sheer white curtains between sections can soften the effect and make the space feel more intimate.
For a year-round look, choose warm white bulbs that won’t clash with seasonal decor. If you want a festive feel during the holidays, swap in multicolored bulbs and add some garland along the top of the fence.
