2. Pergola Canopy Installation for Full Coverage

If you have a pergola, you already have the perfect frame for an overhead string light canopy. But instead of just running one strand back and forth, consider weaving multiple strands in a grid pattern to create a ceiling of stars. This look feels especially enchanting in the late evening hours.
Materials include several boxes of outdoor-rated string lights (commercial-grade ones last longest), screw-in cup hooks, a drill, and extension cords rated for outdoor use. You may also want a ladder and a helper.
Begin by installing cup hooks along the top beams of your pergola every few feet. The hooks should face upward so the lights rest on top. Run your first strand of lights along the length of the pergola, securing it to each hook. Then run strands perpendicular to create a grid. The tighter the grid, the more dramatic the effect. Plug everything into a GFCI outdoor outlet and use weatherproof cord covers for safety.
The full project takes around three to four hours, mostly because of the ladder work. The difficulty is moderate, mainly due to balancing on a ladder while stringing lights. Bulb type matters here: warm white Edison-style bulbs give a vintage look, while small globe bulbs feel more modern and playful.
For a soft, romantic variation, drape a few strands of sheer white fabric between the beams before stringing the lights. The fabric will catch the light and create a dreamy, gauzy ceiling effect that looks especially lovely during dinner parties.
