8. Hanging Leather Wine Rack

8
For a wine rack that doubles as wall decor, consider a hanging leather design. These are surprisingly simple to make, and the soft material brings warmth to a kitchen that wood and metal can’t quite match. They also take up zero counter space, hanging from a single nail or hook.

You’ll need a piece of vegetable-tanned leather, about 18 inches by 24 inches, plus a leather hole punch, grommet kit, and some sturdy waxed cord or leather thonging. Mark a pattern of bottle-sized circles in a staggered layout, cut the holes with a sharp utility knife, then reinforce each hole with a grommet. The leather will stretch slightly under the weight of the bottles, so cut the holes a touch smaller than you think you need.

Attach the cord through the grommets to create a hanging loop at the top, and the bottom corners can be tied together or weighted with small wooden beads. The whole project takes about two hours including leather conditioning time.

This is one of the most photogenic projects on the list, and it makes a thoughtful handmade gift. The leather will develop a beautiful patina over time, deepening in color and becoming more personal with every use. It’s especially fitting for boho, eclectic, or warm minimalist kitchens.
