8. Convertible Tote-to-Backpack

8
If you love practical bags that do more than one job, the convertible tote-to-backpack is a weekend project worth tackling. With adjustable straps, the bag can be carried by hand over the shoulder, slung across the body, or worn as a backpack. It’s perfect for travel, commuting, or a busy day of errands when your hands need a break.

The bag itself is a structured tote with D-rings sewn into the side seams. The straps thread through the rings and can be adjusted using sliders. When you want to use it as a backpack, you simply pull the straps to shorten them and tie or clip them at the top. When you want tote handles, you let the straps hang loose or tuck them inside.

This project takes about four hours and is best for someone with intermediate skills, since installing D-rings cleanly takes a bit of practice. For the most comfortable result, use a thicker cotton canvas or denim. A padded bottom panel is optional but recommended if you’ll be carrying heavier items. Adding a zippered top closure turns it into a secure travel companion.
