6. Painted Canvas Tote with Stencils

6
If you love the look of painted bags but don’t want to skip the sewing entirely, this project gives you the best of both worlds. Sew a basic tote from plain canvas or cotton, then use fabric paint and stencils to add a custom design. It’s a wonderful project for showcasing your favorite quotes, monograms, botanical shapes, or seasonal motifs.

Start with a simple unlined tote in natural canvas, which provides a slightly textured surface that holds paint beautifully. Once your bag is sewn and pressed, lay it flat and tape your stencil in place. Dab fabric paint over the stencil with a sponge or stiff brush rather than brushing back and forth, which prevents bleeding under the edges. Let each layer dry fully before adding the next.

This project takes about two hours of sewing plus drying time. The sewing is beginner-friendly, and the painting is as easy or as detailed as you want to make it. A few fun customization ideas include using metallic fabric paint, layering multiple stencil colors, or adding hand-painted details like leaves and stems around a central design. It’s also a wonderful project to do with kids, since they love creating their own designs.
