6. Upcycled Wooden Pallet Wall Planter

6
For those who love a rustic, farmhouse, or industrial aesthetic, an upcycled wooden pallet planter is a fantastic weekend project. It turns a discarded shipping item into a dramatic, space-saving vertical garden. By mounting a modified pallet to a kitchen wall, you create multiple horizontal planting troughs that can hold a wide variety of herbs in a compact, organized structure that juts out only a few inches from the wall.

To build this, source a small, clean wooden pallet that is heat-treated (marked with “HT”) rather than chemically treated. Sand down any rough spots to prevent splinters. To create the planting pockets, attach durable landscape fabric to the undersides and backs of the pallet slats using a heavy-duty staple gun. This fabric holds the soil in place while allowing excess water to drain through. Once the pockets are secure, fill them with a rich, well-draining potting soil and plant a diverse array of herbs. You can organize your plants by tier, placing taller, sun-loving herbs like rosemary and basil on the top shelf, and moisture-loving, trailing herbs like thyme and oregano on the lower levels.
