11. Copper-Toned Butterfly Curls for Fall

Copper toned curly butterfly haircut glowing in autumn light

Nothing says fall like copper. A rich copper or auburn tone over a butterfly cut makes every layer glow — the color catches the light differently on each curl, so the whole head looks dimensional and alive. It is the ultimate autumn transformation, and it flatters warm and neutral skin tones especially well.

Copper fades faster than other shades, so commit to color-safe care. Ask your colorist for a demi-permanent copper gloss if you want to test the waters before going all in with permanent color.

What You’ll Need

  • Color-depositing copper conditioner
  • Sulfate-free shampoo
  • Deep conditioning mask
  • Heat protectant
  • Leave-in conditioner
  • Curl-defining gel

How to Make

  1. Wash with sulfate-free shampoo in lukewarm — never hot — water.
  2. Once a week, swap conditioner for a color-depositing copper mask.
  3. Apply leave-in and gel to soaking-wet curls, scrunching well.
  4. Diffuse on low heat or air-dry to protect the color.
  5. Use heat protectant before any hot tools — copper is heat-sensitive.
  6. Refresh the tone with the copper conditioner every 2 to 3 washes.
