10. Butterfly Cut for Fine Curly Hair
Fine curls need a butterfly cut with strategy: too many layers and the ends go wispy, too few and the top falls flat. The sweet spot is fewer, well-placed layers concentrated at the crown and face frame, with blunter ends to keep density. Done right, fine curls look twice as thick — all bounce, no stringiness.
Ask your stylist to keep the perimeter fairly solid and build the layering into the interior. A shorter overall length (collarbone or above) also helps fine curls hold their spring instead of stretching out.
What You’ll Need
- Volumizing shampoo
- Lightweight leave-in (never heavy butters)
- Foam or mousse
- Root-lift spray
- Diffuser
- Silk scrunchies
How to Make
- Wash with volumizing shampoo and condition only the ends.
- Apply a pea-sized amount of lightweight leave-in — fine hair is easily weighed down.
- Work foam through from roots to ends and scrunch well.
- Spray root-lift at the crown and clip roots up while diffusing.
- Diffuse on high speed, low heat to build body without frizz.
- Finish with a cool shot and gentle root shake for airy fullness.
