A built-in bench seat that doubles as comfortable seating, a dining area, and a massive storage chest is a must-have for any efficient camper van layout. You can take this concept a step further by building a nested nesting-box ottoman bench.
Construct a sturdy wooden bench frame with a comfortable upholstered foam cushion on top that acts as a removable lid. Inside the bench, instead of having one giant, unorganized cavity, build or purchase custom-fitted wooden nesting boxes or fabric bins that slide perfectly into the space. This allows you to categorize your belongings—such as dry food in one box, winter gear in another, and electronics in a third. When you need something, you can easily lift the bench lid and pull out the specific box you need, preventing you from having to rummage through a chaotic pile of gear.
