7. Chocolate Shavings and Curls

7
Chocolate shavings look fancy, but they’re about as easy as decorating gets. With a chocolate bar and a vegetable peeler, you can create beautiful curls that dress up any cake in minutes.

Start with a chocolate bar that’s at room temperature. Hold the bar firmly and drag a vegetable peeler across the long edge. The shavings will curl naturally, especially if the chocolate is slightly warm. If you want bigger, more dramatic curls, briefly warm the bar in the microwave for 5 to 10 seconds first.

Pile the curls generously on top of a frosted cake and let a few tumble down the sides. They pair beautifully with coffee-flavored cakes, chocolate ganache, or a simple vanilla buttercream. Materials include one or two chocolate bars, a vegetable peeler, and a frosted cake. Time required is just 10 minutes, with a very low difficulty level. White, milk, and dark chocolate can all be used alone or combined for a striking contrast.
